SOORIYAN (S-uu-ri-en, „Sun“ in Tamil) is a collective formed by South Asian artists navigating subcultures in Switzerland. The country is not exactly known for its diasporic nightlife and artistic realms. The structures are exclusive, the gatekeepers unshaken. SOORIYAN aims to empower and celebrate the variety of South Asian creativity by reclaiming how diasporic identities are portrayed and understood, while reflecting on Switzerland’s own migration histories. The South Asian diaspora, especially the Tamil community, is one of the largest non-EU populations in Switzerland. Yet, they are often overlooked in cultural practices and remain underrepresented both on stage and behind the scenes. The collective, working class and rooted in a DIY approach, does notjust aim to make diaspora artists more visible but contribute to lay the foundations for more autonomy. By hosting events and radio shows as well as by providing opportunities for exchange and skill sharing they are shaping a new language for cultural production that embraces hybrid identities. The collective builds on the momentum of a new generation of South Asian artistry and wants to create a dialogue with the local subculture, to voice the complexity of their references and the dualities they carry.
